By what possibility? | |
By what mysterious impulsion? | |
Page No. 82 Para No. 8 | |
There is an answer. | |
It is most approved by the Indian mind. | |
It is Force inherent in Existence. | |
Shiva and Kali are one. | |
Brahman and Shakti are one. | |
They are not two. |
They are not separable. | |
Force is inherent in existence. | |
It may be at rest. | |
It may be in motion. | |
At rest, it still exists. | |
It exists nonetheless. | |
It is not abolished. | |
Not diminished. | |
Not essentially altered. | |
This reply is rational. | |
It is entirely so. |
It accords with the nature of things. | |
We need not hesitate. | |
We can readily accept it. |
Here is an existence. | |
It is infinite. |
We cannot say Force is alien to it. |
Nor can we say it entered from outside. | |
“It was originally non-existent.” | “” |
“It arose later at some time.” |
These are unacceptable. | |
The illusionist has a theory. | |
It admits of Maya. | |
Maya is power of self-illusion in Brahman. | |
It is potentially eternal. | |
It is in the eternal Being. |
There is only one question. | |
It is manifestation or non-manifestation. | |
The Sankhya asserts the coexistence. |

Movement is disturbance of equilibrium. | |
Page No. 83 Para No. 9 | |
Force is thus inherent in existence. | |
It has a double potentiality. | |
It is the nature of the Force. | |
Maybe it is the alternative potentiality. | |
It alternates between rest and movement. | |
One is self-concentration in Force. | |
The other is self-diffusion in Force. | |
The how of the movement is a question. | |
The question of the movement is there. |
Its possibility is another question. | |
Initiating impulsion must be explained. | |
Its impelling cause arises. | |
This potentiality must translate. | |
It may translate into a rhythm. | |
It is a rhythm of rest and movement. | |
They succeed each other in Time. |
Or else it may be eternal self-concentration. | |
It is a self-concentration of Force. | |
It is the superficial play in existence. | |
It is a change of formation. | |
It is like the waves of the ocean. | |
This is a superficial play. | |
(This is an inadequate image.) |
Maybe it is coeval with self-concentration. | |
Therefore it is also eternal. | |
Or it may begin and end in Time. |
It may resume by a sort of constant rhythm. | |
Then it is not eternal in continuity. | |
It is eternal in recurrence. | |
Page No. 83 Para No. 10 | |
How is eliminated. | |
The question why remains. | |
This is a possibility of a play. | |
It is a play of the movement. | |
It is the Force that moves. | |
The play translates itself. | |
Why is there at all this translation? | |
Why should it not remain concentrated? | |
Concentrated, it is infinite, free. | |
It is thus free from all variation. | |
Also of formation. | |
Let us assume existence to the non-conscious. | |
Consciousness is only a development. | |
It is a development of material energy. | |
We wrongly suppose material energy immaterial. | |
Then this question does not arise. | |
Then we can say the following. | |
The rhythm is the nature of the Force. | |
The Force is in existence. | |
Why should we look for a reason? | |
It is eternally self-existent. | |
That is its nature. | |
Therefore no question of why arises. | |
Self-existence is eternal. | |
Self-force of existence is eternal too. |
Nature of impulsion to movement is inherent in self-force. | |
We cannot ask them why they exist. | |
Or how they came into existence. | |
We can inquire into its manner of self-manifestation. | |
We can try to know its principles of movement. | |
We can ask about its formation. | |
Its process of evolution too can be inquired into. |
We cannot go beyond that. |
Existence is inert. | |
Force is inert. | |
Their status is inert. | |
Their impulsion is inert. | |
Both of them are unconscious. | |
Both are unintelligent. | |
Therefore there cannot be any purpose in evolution. | |
So also, there can be no final goal in evolution. | |
Nor can there be any original cause. | |
No intention can be there too. |
Page No. 84 Para No. 11 | |
We can suppose Existence is conscious. | |
We can think it to be a Conscious Being. |
Then the problem arises. | |
We can suppose otherwise. | |
It may be a Conscious Being. |
We may say it is subject to its nature of Force. | |
It is compelled by the Force. | |
The Being, we can say, has no option. | |
It has no choice to decide its course. | |
Its manifestation or otherwise is decided by the Force. | |
Of course, the Tantrics have such a God. | |
The Mayavadins too do so. |
They subject the Purusha to Shakti or Maya. | |
It is a Purusha involved or controlled by Maya. | |
Obviously such a god is not supreme. | |
It is not the supreme infinite Existence. | |
We did start with that. |
This is only a formulation of Brahman. | |
It is the Brahman in the cosmos. | |
This is logically anterior to Shakti or Maya. | |
This takes her back from her works. | |
It takes back into its transcendental being. |
We started with a conscious existence. | |
It is absolute. |
It is independent of formations. | |
It is not determined by its works. | |
It has an inherent freedom to manifest or not to manifest. | |
It manifests its potentiality of movement. | |
A Brahman may be compelled by Prakriti. | |
In that case, it is not Brahman. | |
But it is an inert Infinite. | |
It has an active content in it. |
It is more powerful than its continent. | |
It is a conscious holder of Force. | |
But his Force is his master. | |
We may say, it is compelled by itself as Force. | |
It is done so by its own nature. | |
Even then, we do not get rid of its contradictions. | |
Our first postulate is evaded thus. |
This takes us back to an Existence. | |
It is really nothing but Force. | |
It is Force at rest. | |
It may be Force in movement. | |
Perhaps it is absolute Force. | |
But it is not absolute Being. |
Page No. 84 Para No. 12 | |
Next is the relationship between Force and Consciousness. | |
What is consciousness? | |
Mental waking consciousness is consciousness for us. |
Man possesses it in his bodily existence. | |
It is during the major part of his life. |
His methods of sensation are superficial. | |
Sleep deprives him of this sensation. | |
It can also be deprived otherwise. | |
Even when stunned, man loses it. |
This is a narrow sense. | |
Thus consciousness is an exception, not the rule. | |
This is the order of the material universe. | |
We do not always possess it. |
This is a vulgar shallow idea. | |
Thus we understand the nature of consciousness. | |
This colours our thought. | |
Our associations are governed by it. |
Now we think philosophically. | |
This vulgar idea must go away from here. |
Sleeping is an unconscious state. |
At least it is apparently so. |
When drugged, we are equally so. |
In a swoon, we have no consciousness. | |
While stunned, we lose consciousness. | |
At all these times, there is something in us. |
It is conscious when we are ‘unconscious’. | |
These are the unconscious states of our being. |
It is the physical being. |
We call our waking state conscious. | |
It is only a small selection from the whole. | |
The whole is the entire conscious being. |
That is what the old thinkers said. |
We are now sure of it. |
This is not even our whole mentality. | |
It is only the surface. | |
There is the subliminal. | |
It is behind it. |
It is much vaster. | |
It is also subconscient. | |
Both are the greater parts of ourselves. | |
They contain height. | |
Profundities too are in it. |
No man has yet fathomed it or measured it. |
Page No. 85 Para No. 13 | |
Materialism speaks of extension of consciousness. | |
To them, it is a material phenomenon. | |
They are inseparable from our physical organs. | |
It is their result. | |
It is not their utiliser. | |
This is an orthodox contention. | |
Knowledge is increasing like a tide. | |
This does not hold against new knowledge. | |
Orthodox view explains more and more. |
These explanations are less adequate. | |
They strain more and more to explain. | |
We now see a greater truth. | |
Our total consciousness has a capacity. | |
Our parts of the body and being have a capacity. | |
Our organs, senses, nerves and the brain are there. |
One exceeds the other. |
Do these organs generate those capacities? | |
These organs are only their habitual instruments. | |
They do not generate those capacities. | |
Consciousness uses the brain. | |
The upward strivings of the brain do not produce the consciousness. | |
Brain has not produced consciousness. | |
Nor does the brain use the consciousness. | |
Consciousness produces the brain for its use. | |
We see this in abnormal instances. | |
They prove our organs are dispensable. | |
The heartbeat is not essential to life. |
Breathing too is not essential to life. |
The organised brain cells are not necessary to thought. | |
An engine is constructed. | |
There is its motive power of steam or electricity. | |
The engine does not cause the steam. | |
Nor does it explain it. |
Similarly, our physical organism does not explain thought. | |
Nor does it explain consciousness. | |
The force is anterior. | |
Not the physical instrument. | |
Page No. 86 Para No. 14 | |
Momentous logical questions follow. | |
We see inertia and inanimation. | |
Mental consciousness exists there. |
If so, what about material objects? | |
Is there a mind present there? |
Would it be universal subconscious mind? | |
It is incapacitated to act? | |
Is it unable to communicate itself to the surface? | |
Can we say, it is due to want of organs? | |
What about the material state? |
Is it empty of consciousness? | |
Or, does consciousness sleep there? |
What is it from the point of view of evolution? | |
It is an original sleep. | |
It is not an intermediate sleep. | |
What is sleep? | |
Let us learn from the human example. | |
Sleep is not a suspension of consciousness. | |
It is a gathering inward away from response. | |
At least from conscious physical response. | |
The impact of external things does not evoke responses. | |
There is existence with no means of communication. | |
They have not yet developed those means for outward communications. | |
The world is external and physical. | |
Existence needs communication with this world. |
Their position is this inability. | |
Much of existence sleeps. | |
Does something awake in them? |
Is it conscious? |
Is it Purusha or Soul? | |
Page No. 86 Para No. 15 | |
We may go farther. | |
We speak of subconscious mind. | |
It is not different from our mentality. | |
Only it is acting below the surface. | |
It is unknown to the waking man. |
It has a deeper plunge. | |
And it has a vaster scope. | |
Subliminal is a different phenomenon. | |
It far exceeds the limits of this definition. | |
Its capacity is immensely superior. | |
It is quite different in kind. | |
It is different from our mentality. | |
Our mentality is in our waking self. | |
If a subconscious is there, there must be a superconscious. |
That is, the conscious faculties have a range. | |
There is organisation of consciousness. | |
It rises high above the psychological stratum. | |
We call that mentality. | |
The subliminal rises to the superconscious. | |
So, it can sink into the subconscious. | |
Are there forms of consciousness that are submental? | |
We call them vital and physical consciousness. | |
Consciousness is confined by us to man and animal. | |
We may suppose a force in the plant and metal. | |
We can call that force too consciousness. | |
Page No. 87 Para No. 16 | |
This is probable. | |
Let us dispassionately consider it. |
It is certain. |
In us there is a vital consciousness. | |
It acts in the cells of the body. | |
The automatic vital functions are by them. |
Thus we go through purposeful movements. | |
Thus attractions and repulsions are obeyed. | |
Our minds are strangers to them. |
It is more important in the animals. | |
In plants, it is intuitively evident. | |
The movements of the plant are not mentality. | |
Plants seek or shrink. | |
They have pleasure and pain. | |
They sleep and are awake. | |
They have all that strange life. |
An Indian scientist demonstrated this. |
All these are movements of consciousness. | |
But they are not of mentality. | |
Then, there is a submental vital consciousness. | |
It is precisely like the mental. | |
But it is different. | |
Different in constitution of self-experience. | |
The superconscient also so differs. |
It too differs in constitution and self-experience. | |
Page No. 87 Para No. 17 | |
Consciousness has a range. | |
We recognise it in sub-animal life. |
Does it stop with that? |
If so, this is a force alien to matter. | |
It has entered into Matter. | |
It has occupied Matter. | |
Perhaps, it came from another world. |
From where can it come? |
The ancient thinkers believed in such a thing. | |
It sustains life and consciousness in us. |
They can even call it out by their pressure. | |
But they do not create it by their entry. | |
If something is in Matter, it can evolve. | |
If it is not already there, it cannot evlove. | |
Page No. 87 Para No. 18 | |
Why should we suppose life stops here or anywhere? | |
Neither does the consciousness need to do so. |
Because it is material, it is not so. |
Recent research and thought speak out. |
They speak of life in metal and earth. | |
It is the obscure beginning of life. |
Maybe a sort of inert consciousness it is. |
Or a suppressed one in there. |
Not only in metal but in ‘inanimate’ forms too. |
At least the first forms of consciousness are there. |
I have called something consciousness. | |
I recognise it as such. |
It is my conception. |
Only in the plant, we can recognise it. |
Matter is an inert form. | |
It is difficult to understand it. |
It is difficult to imagine too. |
Therefore we think it is right to deny. | |
We have pursued consciousness thus far. | |
It is very far in Nature. | |
Maybe so far into its depths. | |
Now we are faced with a gulf. | |
It is incredible. |
The characteristic of thought is unity. | |
It finds unity everywhere. | |
In every other phenomenon there is unity. | |
In one class it is apparently denied. | |
Maybe it is concealed, not denied. | |
We can suppose unity is unbroken. | |
Then it gives us consciousness in all. |
Forms of Force are at work in the world. |
In all those forms there is consciousness. | |
Thus we arrive at consciousness in all forms. | |
There may be no conscient Purusha in all forms. | |
Or superconscient Purusha may not be there. |
There is a conscious force of being in all forms. | |
Their outer parts partake of that form. | |
It may be overt or inert partaking. | |

This is a revolutionary view. | |
This view changes the meaning of the word itself. | |
It is necessary. |
Now consciousness is synonymous with mentality. | |
It is a self-aware force of existence. | |
Mentality is its middle term. | |
Below mentality it is vital and physical. | |
They are subconscient to us now. |
Above it rises to the supramental. | |
It is superconscient to us. |
But in all it is one and the same thing. | |
It organises itself differently. | |
This is the Indian conception of Chit. | |
Chit is energy and creates the worlds. | |
We arrive at unity from the other end. | |
Materialistic Science perceives it. |
It finds Mind cannot be another force than Matter. | |
It asserts that finding. | |
To it, Mind must be a development of Matter. | |
It says, it is the outcome of material energy. | |
Indian thought has reached the depths. | |
Its affirmation is different. | |
To it, Mind and Matter are of the same energy. | |
They are only different grades. | |
Both are of one conscious Force and Existence. | |
They are of different organisations. | |

We describe here Consciousness as Force. | |
Is this a just description for this Force? | |
Do we have a right to it? |
Consciousness has three attributes. | |
They are intelligence, purposefulness, self-knowledge. | |
They may take different form from our mentality. | |
Even from this point of view, we are right. |
Everything supports our description. | |
Nothing contradicts our position. | |
Our idea is a universal conscious Force. | |
For instance, let us consider the animal. | |
Operations are perfectly purposeful. | |
They are even exact. | |
The knowledge here is scientifically minute. | |
They are quite beyond animal mentality. | |
Man himself can acquire only by long culture. | |
Equally long education is needed for him. |
When he uses them, he will be less exact. | |
He will be much less sure in his speed. | |
Here is a proof. | |
There is a general fact. | |
It proves the conscious Force at work. |
It is in the animal and the insect. | |
This exceeds the greatest known intelligence. | |
It is more purposeful. | |
It is more intelligent. | |
It is more aware of its intention. | |
It takes care of its ends, means and conditions. | |
No such mentality is yet manifested on earth. | |
Inanimate Nature operates this way. |
Here is a characteristic. | |
It pervades the operations. | |
It is supreme hidden intelligence. | |
It is ‘hidden in the modes of its own working’. |
Page No. 89 Para No. 21 | |
There is one argument against. |
We say it is a conscious intelligent source. | |
It is for this purposeful work. |
It is a work of intelligence, selection, adaptation and seeking. | |
That element too is in Nature’s operation. | |
We call that argument waste. | |
Ours is human intellect. | |
It is obviously limited. | |
Human mind is rational. | |
But its rationality is particular. | |
It is good enough for human ends. | |
It applied that rationality to the World-Force. | |
We see only part of Nature’s purpose. | |
We call the rest waste. | |
We do so because the rest is not useful. | |
Our own human action is like that. |
It is full of apparent waste. | |
It is right for the individual. | |
But it subserves the universal purpose. | |
We can detect that part of the intention. | |
Nature gets done enough. | |
In spite of the waste much gets done. | |
Perhaps because of the waste much is accomplished. | |
There is the other part we do not detect. | |
We may well trust Nature here too. |
Page No. 89 Para No. 22 | |
Let us consider the rest. | |
Nature has her drive of set purpose. | |
It is apparantly a blind tendency. | |
It appears to guide Nature. | |
This is the characteristic of Nature. | |
Eventually She comes to the target set. | |
She does so immediately. | |
The World-Force operates in the animal. | |
It does so in the plant. | |
In inanimate things too it operates. | |
Matter was the Alpha and Omega to the scientist. | |
They are reluctant to admit intelligence to Nature. | |
Nature’s intelligence is the mother of intelligence. | |
It was an honest scruple. | |
But it is no more so. |
Now it is an outworn paradox. | |
Scientists affirm the emergence of human intelligence. | |
They say it emerges out of unconsciousness. | |
They do so for mastery and consciousness. | |
They look to blind driving unconsciousness as source. | |
No form ever existed in unconsciousness. | |
No substance ever existed in Nature previously. | |
Man’s consciousness is a form of Nature’s consciousness. | |
It is there below mind. | |
It emerges in Mind. | |
It shall ascend beyond Mind. | |
The Force that builds the world is a conscious Force. | |
Existence manifests itself in it. |
It is a conscious Being. |
Emergence in form is the sole object. | |
The potentials must have a perfect emergence. | |
We can rationally conceive it. |
The potentials thus manifest in this world. |
This is a world of Forms. | |
