Silent Will in Pride and Prejudice

September 10, 2008

Silent will belongs to the four planes - physical, vital, mental, spiritual - or can be assigned to levels 1 to 9. It also divides itself into successful as well as failed ones. In addition to it, we can assign some to subtle and causal planes. Silent will includes the opposite vociferous demands. They too succeed or fail. It is possible to bring all actions under silent will. At least one for each page of the book can be collected. In a programme of virtual reality, the collection of a few hundred silent wills will be of great use. This is true of Life Response and another dozen development principles, as the Line, the subtle are more powerful.  By themselves they can play a powerful role. In combination, they will be formidable as then they will reveal life. Below are some examples of Silent will.

  1. Jane's life is one of silent will and it can be taken as a dozen such acts.
  2. After he was refused, Darcy resorted to it. It acted through Lady Catherine.
  3. Charlotte's aspiration for Collins is silent. Her expressions of wish for Elizabeth's and Jane's marriages is partially Silent will. It is a good example of Silent will spoken out once.
  4. All aspirations of women for marriage are silent will.
  5. The first conversation of Elizabeth with Wickham is an excellent expression of Silent will on the parts of both to let the other talk.
  6. Lydia's plan from the time she received Jane and Elizabeth at the inn is one of silent will that escapes subconsciously.
  7. Wickham's silent wish to poison Elizabeth against Darcy had its opposite effect.
  8. Elizabeth makes Fitzwilliam talk of Darcy by Silent will.
  9. Elizabeth's wish that Darcy should find Lydia is a subconscious will, another version of Silent will.
  10. Mrs. Gardiner's silent perception of the mercenary character of Wickham not only saved Elizabeth but also Miss King.
  11. Mrs. Bennet's wish that Lydia should marry first is strong, but she has not expressed it at all.
  12. Lady Catherine's Silent will is silenced forever. It is a powerful example of SILENT failure. An explanation will widen the scope and raise the level of interest.
  13. Mr. Gardiner's attitude is mostly silent though he gives an oral promise to his sister. The power of the attitude acted silently.
  14. The Life Response of Darcy coming to Pemberley to meet Elizabeth is obviously silent will on the part of both.
  15. Silent will can be graded as:
    • Rising will inside becoming silent will;
    • Will unable to rise out of circumstances or character;
    • Partially expressed silent will;
    • Subconscious will observed as a silent one;
      unperceived subconscious will;
      perceived subconscious will
    • Intended silent will escaping in speech involuntarily;
    • Another's silent will acting through one;
    • Life is will acting in us as Silent one.
    • What was once prominent and now forgotten acting as Silent will;
    • Silent will speaking the very opposite or completing the opposite;
    • There are serious issues that occupy the mind. Silent will with respect to that makes one forget the issue.
    • There are most serious issues that never come to the surface of the mind. Here even the will is missing. Silent will has a role even here. Try to find examples from the story.
    We can exhaust this list and establish rules for each case.
  16. Failure of Silent will is more expressive.
  17. All along Bingley's will is silent against the dominant will of Darcy.
  18. Mrs. Gardiner's SILENCE on Elizabeth's love for Darcy ends up in her own writing about it at length.
  19. Mrs. Bennet's attitude of attraction to red coats that once escaped her at the dining table was amply fulfilled in Lydia's elopement with a red coat.
  20. Will, when silent, works elsewhere as Darcy's silence on Georgiana worked in Lydia's life.

Sri Aurobindo says Shakespeare only had power of life or truth of life whereas all the poets of India from Valmiki and Thiruvalluvar had the intuitive spiritual truth of life. Jane Austen certainly had more knowledge than life contained. She perceived the political truth in life is the truth the French Revolution was forcing on England. Jane Bennet is passive, sweet and quiet. We have called it silent will. Sweetness is the result of Truth expressing through love. The sweetness of her temperament takes her to the subtle plane. There she keeps her intensity. It is true Bingley could marry any girl he liked. It is also true that he once forgot himself in Jane's company. The main characteristic of Bingley and the first requirement of his character is submission to the will of Darcy. Submission is the inverse of power. In submitting to Darcy, Bingley seeks harmony. Harmony is the vibration of unity expressing through power which is in the subtle plane. Here Bingley remains determined. Bingley and Jane thus meet in the subtle plane and remain intense. A ruse is in the subtle plane. Darcy's resort to a ruse has to meet the intense power of Jane-Bingley. Darcy's ruse is one that unites him with Caroline. This combination has no power as against Jane-Bingley in the same plane. Life forces him to confess to Bingley. The truth in the love of Jane for Bingley is more than a match for Caroline's desire for Darcy, especially when it is motivated by jealousy against Elizabeth. The silence of Jane and Bingley permit the strength to collect and overcome the opposition. Jane Austen has provided for Jane, who was thwarted in the physical plane, to accomplish in the subtle plane.

With Darcy, she leads him to reach his goal through transformation, thus becoming a vehicle for the revolutionary force from across the channel. He has sought harmony with Elizabeth at all costs and expected love from her through that harmony, in which sense it becomes Supramental love of a very distant nature. Elizabeth's willingness to move away from vital infatuation of falsehood enabled the right result.

I mentioned earlier collecting every act of Silent will, classifying them in three planes - gross, subtle, causal - and the four levels - physical, vital, mental, spiritual. This scholarly effort takes us to the subtle plane from this point of view. The principles of Life Response; the Line; organisation; consciousness; institutions; the levels 1 to 9; the subdivisions of consciousness and substance; positive and negative; high and low will give us about a thousand approaches to the novel. We also study the novel from manners, behaviour, character, personality and individuality. There is a further dimension of study from energy, force, power, skill, etc. These viewpoints of one or two thousand in their sum will take us to the subtle plane while the whole of it can move it to the causal plane revealing higher dimensions of life and knocking at the gates of existence. The virtual reality you have in mind is sure to bring us a few thousand responses, each of which will confirm our recommendations and render them precise. It is possible for us to see that the Project is moving towards comprehensive preciseness.

The farm worker who was paid Rs. 1/- a day in 1965 is now paid Rs. 200/- a day. There was a time when inflation moved wealth from the rural areas to the cities, from the poor to the rich. By the price configuration of 1965, today a bag of paddy should sell for Rs. 7500/-. The government by its regulation keeps it around Rs. 700/- which means the political initiative of the government in the market allows the farm laborer to spend his earnings more on clothes, education, entertainment, travel, etc. It is an economic device to civilize the rural sides at the expense of the other sections. Pride and Prejudice captures the mood of the society astir with revolutionary aspirations and portrays how the wave of emerging social power acts in favour of the lower gentry, the middle classes, the trades people. In that, Jane Austen has the perception of more than the truth of life with which Shakespeare is credited; she has the perception of the evolutionary truth in everyday life of young people seeking marriage partners.
