Stages from identification with our lower nature to self-awareness to self-control to spiritual freedom. Evolution of consciousness moves from vital animality to mental morality to spiritual knowledge of the Supreme Will. Each has a place in the evolutionary progression. Unconsciousness of our defects to self-justification of them to self-condemnation and regret are stages in our progress to the joy of spiritual detachment and freedom from ignorant lower nature. Each stage has its rightful role in our progress from bondage to nature to true free will. Conversion of pain into ananda can best be understood by seeing that our psychological sorrows often get converted into joy later on when we see the eventual outcome of something we deeply regret. The same principle applies at the physical level when we outgrow the reaction of pain to experience the ananda behind every happening.
