Organised Terrorism – Sporading Violence

June 12, 2002

  • When the body learns, it acquires a skill which absorbs all the physical energy and demands more.
  • The physical in the absence of acquiring skill demands a release for its energies. It releases those energies against all those who are differently organised. This is violence.
  • Culture is known to absorb considerable energies of the cultivated mind over centuries. Growing culture is an insurance against sprouting violence.
  • Culture of any time is the cream of society.
  • If culture organises the energies of the mind so that the established behaviour of the entire society may be elevated, wealth earned demands inexhaustible energies to organise its absorption into the lives of people so that it may have peace enough to enjoy what it has earned. Even the earning of that wealth needs a vast amount of energies.
  • To earn money one needs to raise his productivity which means organising oneself in the outer as well as inner life.
  • An affluent society invests abundant energy to generate wealth. It needs equally vast energies at a higher level to enjoy that wealth in agreeable forms.
  • Culture and wealth consume considerable energies first having released them through aspiration.
  • Every activity of the society in one direction enables it to act in the opposite direction. All growing societies have vast opportunities to turn violent against its neighbors or on its own population either by enslaving a portion of it or tyrannizing over it.
  • Accumulation of wealth has other demands on its energies.
  • Culture, Education, Affluence are the three vast ways of consuming a society's energies outside the military exploits.
  • Violence is inescapable as it is the action of the unorganised energy. It is present in various forms at various stages of social growth.

- Crude living which is violence to one's body.

- Brutality to another which is the first symptom of emerging out of crude living. The physical ego demonstrates to itself its superiority in leaving crudeness behind by being brutal to the other parts of society.

- To mercilessly crush the weaker members of the society or family for the same purpose. Children and women were the victims of power in the beginning. The early formation of culture always established its superiority over some portion of the family or the society.

- It looks for total domination but certainly achieves it over a part.

- Laws that mete out JUSTICE in earlier societies confined it to one portion and consciously denied it to others.

- Culture, education and affluence have always used a great amount of energy but the effort has been partial with respect to the society.

- On any showing there is a part left out. Always there is an unorganised part which is unable to receive the higher benefits.

- Organised terrorism as well as sporading violence can thus be traced to their ORIGINS in the global or national societies emerging into culture, education or affluence.

  • If this diagnosis is right, what remedies can we conceive of at once?
  • Abolition of poverty is the easiest by providing productive skills and guaranteed employment.
  • Spread of education is the next best, which can be achieved in a few decades once its significance is realised.
  • We see the abolition of poverty is directly related to the spread of education.
  • To abolish the one by spreading the other is the process.
  • One can write a voluminous monograph on how the society is at great pains to impart productive skills, to organise education at all levels and above all extract the essence of culture from education and wealth.
  • Most of them are either unconscious social efforts or unorganised collective efforts. To make it conscious and organised is to wipe off terrorism as well as violence.
  • Assuming there is an unofficial planning body for the world of entirely rational men fully informed in their own fields as experts, it is possible to present a plan by which poverty can be abolished at once, and the educational levels raised considerably in the shortest possible time. A body of experts that are rational can see the validity of such a plan.
  • It only means the KNOWLEDGE to be free is there.
  • Only when this knowledge is accepted by governments and societies it can become real. Let us not discuss it NOW.
  • Let us only consider the ways and means readily available for action and what will be their impact.
  • Outside the governmental power, there is an 'organised elite' of the world with its branches in every field. These organised forces, by virtue of their organisation, put themselves effectively outside the field of useful action. We shall, for the present, disregard them for our purposes.
  • Outside these two sectors are eminent minds NOT ORGANISED which are, if not fully open minded, available for a serious consideration of immediate possibilities. In this article, I would like to explain what those minds can do to humanity by the power of knowledge.
  • Knowledge is power in some measure, if not in all levels.
  • What the mind understands fully as a conviction comes to be lived as a way of life sooner or later.

- The more that mind is enlightened and the more it is representative, the quicker is the result.

- A knowledge BECOMES power by its purity, precision, truth, comprehensiveness and integrality.

- It needs a channel to reach its destination.

- The government channel is closed, social channel is clogged.

- The minds of the elite and the minds of the population are in touch with each other in the subtle plane where the Force is working presently.

  • Assuming such minds can be gathered and such a plan can be presented to them, let us also assume it is endorsed.
  • This is the way by which any problem of the world can be fully solved at once. Here we consider only violence.
  • In these minds there are expressions of mental violence. In moments of frustration one exclaims, "I shall crush him, let me kill him" as Lee Iaccoca said he would like to break the bones of Ford who wronged him. It is easy to see its presence.
  • What these minds emotionally accept, I said, will be implemented by the wider society at once. I wish to point out the reverse phenomenon here that organised terrorism and sporadic violence found in the society are found in all these minds as a symbol. To root them out there as symbols is more easily possible than wiping them off in the wider society.
  • Should that be done, one can witness dramatic changes in the world, if not miraculous revolutions. It can be a good beginning.
  • Who is to do this? How?
  • One who has abiding FAITH in Spiritual Peace inside himself can go in and measure the extent of it, especially its truth. If it is a small group or vast gathering of a dozen or hundred people devoted to the abolition of violence, it is the appropriate place to begin with. Whether it is a few dedicated persons or many enthusiastic ones, it does not matter as long as their aspiration for Peace is TRUE.
  • For one to qualify himself to be a member of that group, one can examine his own mind, vital, his motives, etc.
  • He will find in his own mind every type of violence in the world symbolically. When he reverses those violent impulse into urges for spiritual peace, he can move into action.
  • As soon as he can do so, he becomes an instrument for international peace.
  • Though this work based on this knowledge is enough to eradicate violence from the face of the earth, there is certainly more for the devotee of Sri Aurobindo to know.
  • Violence is not bad, it is not to be abolished. It is only a violent form of energy moving without direction. The world today starting from inside the atom is a field of fast moving energies. It is a speed that exceeds the speed of light.
  • To abolish violence is moonshine. Nothing in this world can be abolished.
  • Abolition of mental violence in the minds of the elite may be enough to abolish the existence of violence in the world, but let us not have the false idea that violence or for that matter, anything, can be abolished.
  • Realisation of the place of SPEED in creation by the mind may be enough to abolish violence in one's mind.
  • A knowledge of the process of creation will inform him of the value and meaning of SPEED, a movement in Time.
  • One reaches an inner calm that is a reservoir of creative energy in the world when he understands the role of Speed in Time.
  • To know from this perspective is to know Her better.
